WORKSHOP 1: SILKCREENING
Silkscreening uses a frame with a "silk" mesh/screen with an image on the scren, either in a stencil form, or "burned" into the screen using photoemulsion and with a special silkscreen paint and squeegee, the ink is pressed through the screen and the end product is the desired image on your poster or clothing. It's fun for people of all ages.
Possible workshops include:
Ready to Print | Wax Stencils | Advanced | Indie Rocker
-
Ready to Print: One image can be sent to Candace, and she will create the silkscreen stencil using photoemulsion, and bring the finished silkcreen (or silkscreens) to the event, which can become property of the organization/party at the end incase more shirts want to be made later. At the event all the participants have to do is have a T-shirt ready and after a quick instruction, the screens can be passed around for everyone to screen their own shirts. Good for teams or organizations who are up for the team building, but not necessarily in learning the process of silkscreening leading up to building the screen and stencil. Requirements: large sinks or garden hoses - this is a great outdoor activity. Time: 10 mins. instruction, 10-30* mins. "passing around the silkscreen" and silkscreening, 20 mins. drying time. *dependant on how many people are at the event.
-
Wax stencils: Kids love this type of workshop where they have to come up with their own one color design to be silkscreened. Once the stencil is cut out, the wax paper is placed underneath the silkscreen frame and mesh, and paint is pressed through. For designs that wish to be used over and over, the photoemulsion method is usually best (see below), wax paper will start to soak and sag once paint is applied. Requirements: large sinks or garden hoses - this is a great outdoor activity. Time: This is a good few hour event, that can be up to a half-day, where as much time is given to create stencils, go through instructions, silkscreen all shirts and allow time to dry.
-
Advanced. This workshop is usually for teens and adults only and uses photoemulsion to create screens. Photoemulsion is based on principles much like photography and opaque artwork is "burned" into the screen using a light table. The result is a crisp graphic that can be screened over and over again. Participants are walked through different techniques of creating the artwork (including using xacto knives and rubylith, photocopying on overhead transparencies, drawing directly to overhead transparencies and cutting out opaque blocks for lettering or shapes.) Participants learn how to staple their own silkscreen, apply photoemulsion and dry in the darkroom, layout their designs, learn how to shoot the screen on a light table, rinse out the screen, and finally silkscreen their graphics onto clothing or fabric. This workshop can be done in the studio, or the equipment can travel (though the light table is quite big! 4' x 2' + legs). Requirements: large sinks, area that can be designated as a 'darkroom', and plenty of room for cutting & silkscreening. This workshop requires atleast 5 participants signed up and costs approx. $125 per person.
- Indie Rocker: I know how to silkscreen and I just need a screen made! Candace meets lots of indie rockers and groups who don't need guidance, and just want a silkscreen of their artwork to make their own shirts. This option is also available. The more ready the artwork is to be put onto the silkscree, the cheaper the cost.

WORKSHOP 2: ZINES
Zines are becoming a pivotal part of DIY (do it yourself) society where you thoughts and words and easily through low-budget printing methods get out into the world. In this workshop, Candace walks participants through the "Whats?" "Why's?" and "How's?" of zine making including how to add personal touches, where to find them, how to sell them, how to lay it out, how to keep costs low and how to use zines as a platform to launch your artistic or writing career (as Candace has.) This workshop works best with teens and adults who have a creative edge and desire to get their work out there. In most workshops, Candace tries to have the workshop go from start to finish, from conception of the zine, to creating the first finished copy which can easily take a full-day's work. Workshops over the course of a few weeks or a few days may work best, but Candace is also open to coming in to art classes or schools to just talk about them on one day and provide a copy of her, "A How to Guide on Zines" for the class to follow in subsequent days without her. WORKSHOP 3: SPOKEN WORD
Having put on countless shows, created a Spoken Work series of zines and events (Poet's Eve) and published countless zines, and full-length books, Candace is a plethora of knowlege in what it takes to market and perform poetry. Creatively Candace loves to write free-flowing, almost subconscious works and in her Poet's Eve events uses a game they've developed to help spur creative though and quick-thinking poetry. Candace's Spoken Word workshops can be a blend of moving through the creative process, including editing, leading through how to market, and can even be in combination to zine-making.
